Het beeld van een paraboolspiegel in het tijdschrift Science & Vie uit 1969 was het startpunt van een rondreis doorheen de Pyreneeën en door België, waarbij Annemie Augustijns in dialoog ging met de zon, met de kracht van zonne-energie en met de magie van spiegels.
1 Het resultaat van die reis is vanaf 4 november te zien op de tentoonstelling ‘Mirrors, Circles and Sunshine’ bij Valerie Traan Gallery in Antwerpen.
Wat heeft de mens te zoeken in het brandpunt van negenduizend spiegels die op de zon gericht zijn? Het is een retorische vraag waarmee Annemie Augustijns zich een speelveld toeëigent om op een eigenzinnige wijze de gewichtigheid van de wetenschap in een ander daglicht te stellen. In haar foto’s documenteert ze niet zomaar enkele wetenschappelijke zonne-ovens, maar voert ze zelf experimenten uit en gaat ze aan de slag met eigenhandig ineen geknutselde paraboolspiegels. Vol verwondering over de optische werking van de zonne-oven onderzoekt ze wat de impact is van die gevangen zonnestralen op de materiële wereld en poogt ze de vluchtige beelden vast te leggen die voortkomen uit het spel van licht en materie. Annemie Augustijns exploreert de grenzen van wat de spiegel laat zien. Dat is immers niet louter een reflectie van de wereld. De spiegel is een instrument om — letterlijk en figuurlijk — de wereld te vervormen en (opnieuw) vorm te geven, met een andere beeldende taal.
Het vangen van de ‘geest van de dingen’ — en op deze expositie gebeurt dat middels spiegels, cirkels en zonneschijn — is wat er op het spel staat in het oeuvre van Annemie Augustijns. Een oeuvre dat ze niet bijeen fotografeert als een zoektocht naar waarheid, maar wel als het creëren van een eigen kleine wereld die als een schaduwzijde van een door wetenschappen en vooruitgang gedreven werkelijkheid opduikt. Een schaduwzijde die weliswaar licht brengt in het duister en die ons laat zien — zoals Maurice Merleau-Ponty ooit schreef — ‘hoe het naïeve beeld van de wereld in het gereflecteerde beeld is inbegrepen en hoe het daarin wordt overstegen.’

1 Een paraboolspiegel is een cirkelvormige spiegel die in dwarsdoorsnede de vorm van een parabool heeft. Deze paraboolvorm heeft de eigenschap om golven en straling die op de spiegel vallen te reflecteren naar één brandpunt. Paraboolspiegels laten toe om op ecologische wijze zeer veel warmte-energie op te wekken. Ze worden ingezet voor wetenschappelijke experimenten en in een kleinere versie vormen ze een duurzaam alternatief voor het traditionele kookfornuis.

The 1969 cover image of a parabolic mirror in the magazine Science & Vie was the starting point of a tour through the Pyrenees and Belgium, during which Annemie Augustijns engaged in a dialogue with the sun, with the power of solar energy and with the magic of mirrors.

What do we seek at the focal point of nine thousand mirrors facing the sun? It is a rhetorical question with which Annemie Augustijns appropriates a playing field in order to put the heaviness of science in a different light. She does this in a rather quirky way; her photographs are not simply the documentation of a few scientific solar ovens. Annemie Augustijns conducts her own experiments, working with parabolic mirrors she cobbled together herself. Full of wonder about the optical workings of the solar furnace, she investigates the impact of captured solar rays on the material world by capturing the fleeting images that emerge from the interplay of light and matter. Annemie Augustijns explores the limits of what the mirror shows: the mirror is not merely a reflection of the world; by using a different visual language, it is both concretely and metaphorically an instrument to distort and (re)shape the world.
Capturing the 'spirit of things' - and at this exhibition this happens through mirrors, circles and sunshine - is what is at stake in Annemie Augustijns' oeuvre. An oeuvre she does not photograph as a search for truth, but rather as the creation of her own little world that emerges as a shadow side of a reality driven by science and progress. A shadow side that brings light to the darkness and shows us - as Maurice Merleau-Ponty once wrote - 'how the naive image of the world is included in the reflected image and how it is transcended in it.’

1 A parabolic mirror is a circular mirror that, in cross-section, has the shape of a parabola. This parabolic shape has the ability to reflect waves and radiation that fall on the mirror toward a single focal point. A parabolic mirror allows for the generation of a significant amount of heat energy in an ecological way. They are used in scientific experiments, and in a smaller form, they provide a sustainable alternative to the traditional cooking stove.
